Hype: My first real interaction with hype was in Grade 7 geography class with Mr Maree upselling the Welwitschia plant found in Namibia. For my entire young person life I wanted to so badly see this plant. Last year I visited a friend in Namibia and we drove in the desert. It was hot. There was nothing. In the far distance we sighted what looked like a mirage of a mangy black rubbish bag. Was this it? The highest ranking thing I wanted to see on my bucket list lay there in a pile on the desert floor. This was it. Since then- hype ain’t gonna catch me again. Be it a crush, destination or a plant. Everyday we come across things being upsold as mysterious and a total ‘wow’ when they’re actually just a B+. In conclusion- live in the moment and not for the moment.
